Puppet Podcast

Most puppeteers would not call themselves “Voiceover Actors.” On Sesame Street, they would be referred to as Muppet Performers, but in general, Puppeteer is the right term. I’m thinking about this right now, because I’ll soon have a puppet. So what will I call myself if I create some puppet videos, particularly if I end up overdubbing their voices? Am I a puppeteer while filming? Do I then become a voiceover actor during dubbing? (Voiceover Actor: aka voice actor, aka voiceover talent, aka, VO, aka VA…that’s another blog.)

Recently I was introduced to the excellent puppetry podcast, aptly named, Puppet Podcast, with Carole BD. She is passionate about promoting puppetry worldwide. She often asks her guest, When did you have your first puppetry crush? When did you first become excited about puppetry, and what was the spark? For Mike Harding, of AppleFun.ca, it was a trip to the Science Centre, here in Toronto. While Mike has been at it, professionally, for years, Carole’s enthusiasm will make anybody excited to try their hand at it. And if I do make the puppet talk, am I a Voiceover Actor or a puppeteer?
